- Single underline is the more compatible choice: it uses one combining mark per character and renders cleanly in nearly every app that accepts Unicode, while double underline can look irregular in apps with tighter mark rendering.
- Use underline on a heading or a single key phrase inside a plain-text bio, not on every line: an underline signals "this matters here", and that signal disappears when everything is underlined.
- Underlined text works well alongside bold Unicode: a bold-underlined name or heading has extra visual weight without requiring any formatting toggle from the app itself.
Common mistakes
- Treating underlined Unicode as a substitute for a hyperlink: in most apps an underline suggests a clickable link, and a visitor who taps it expecting a link will be frustrated. Use underline only where the visual emphasis, not a link affordance, is the goal.
- Underlining a full paragraph: the combining marks under each character add visual noise to long runs of text and slow reading, because the underline breaks the inter-word spacing the eye relies on.
- Pasting underlined text into a word processor as a document element: the combining marks do not hook into the app's own underline system, so the text won't reflow or respond to formatting tools the way a native underlined run would.
